John McCain entered the Naval Academy in June of 1954. He served in the United States Navy until 1981, spending five and a half years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam.

After the war McCain continued his service, attending the National War College before being assigned as commanding officer of the Navy’s largest aviation squadron in Jacksonville, Florida. McCain’s final Navy duty assignment was as the Navy Liaison to the U.S. Senate. His military honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982, and he succeeded legendary Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater in the United States Senate in 1986. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. He was the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 2008 election.

John has seven children and four grandchildren, and currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Cindy.
