Paul Dominique Laxalt (born August 2, 1922) is an American politician who was Governor of Nevada from 1967 to 1971 and a United States Senator from 1974 to 1987.

Laxalt was born on August 2, 1922 in Reno, Nevada, the son of a Basque shepherd and a restaurateur. He attended Santa Clara University, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and graduated from the University of Denver law school.

His first run for public office was the District Attorney’s race of Ormsby County, Nevada, where he served from 1950 to 1954. He served one term as lieutenant governor of Nevada from 1963 to 1967 prior to running for governor.

Laxalt has been married twice, to the former Jackalyn Ross from 1946-1972, and to the his current wife, Carol, since 1976. He has six children, one stepdaughter, twelve grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
