If we see Aaron Burr only as the man who shot Alexander Hamilton, we’ve missed the point.
He championed due process against political rivalry in Thomas Jefferson’s administration as Jefferson’s Vice President, even when he became the victim of the same political jealousy. Though he was ultimately acquitted, Burr was prosecuted by Jefferson under a charge of treason upon flimsy and possibly forged evidence, and the trial forever tarnished Burr’s name as a supporter of justice.
