Dick Armey

Dick Armey served in the House of Representatives for eighteen years, becoming Majority Leader in 1994. That year he was the main author of the Contract with America, which helped Republicans take control of the House for the first time in forty years.

A native of Cando, North Dakota, Armey has an undergraduate degree from Jamestown College and graduate degrees from the University of North Dakota and the University of Oklahoma. He served on the economics faculty at the University of Montana from 1964 to 1965. Armey was an assistant professor of economics at West Texas State University from 1967 to 1968, at Austin College from 1968 to 1972, and at North Texas State (now the University of North Texas) from 1972 to 1977. He served as chairman of the economics department at North Texas State from 1977 to 1983. He and his wife, Susan, have one son, Scott.
