This was one of the worst weeks yet of the Trump administration. The president is now bearing attacks from both sides over his clumsy response to the clash of violence at last weekend’s Charlottesville white supremacist rally. His CEO councils have disbanded. Mitt Romney, Marco Rubio, James Murdoch, John McCain, and other prominent Republicans and businessman have strongly and publicly rebuked the president for bungling an opportunity to condemn white supremacy. Even the president’s usual defenders have questioned his initial statement and later off-the-cuff press conference.
But is all the criticism now directed at Trump an organic reaction to Trumo’s mistakes—or is there an orchestrated campaign to bring down the Trump White House?
For weeks, Rush Limbaugh has been arguing that the D.C. establishment is conspiring to bring an end to the Trump administration.
“What we are in the middle of and what we have been in the middle of, essentially since election night and all the days following, is a silent coup,” Limbaugh told his listeners on July 12. He continued:
There has been an effort, silent, meaning nobody is actually expressing this desire verbally. Nobody is saying this is what’s going on. But there is a coup underway, being led by the media with accomplices in the Democrat Party and a number of international players to reject the outcome of the election, to undermine the presidency of Donald Trump, and, if the wish list were realized, to get rid of him.
That is what we have been living with. That has been the sole purpose of the news business since the day after the election. And in this ensuing period of time, say from early November to now — what is that, nine months? — the American people have had to endure a daily assault of innuendo, allegation, accusation, supposition with literally no evidence whatsoever to support any of the charges that have been made.
Even the left-wing news site The Nation believes the ongoing attacks against Donald Trump are part of a coordinated plot. As far back as February, The Nation asked: “Are We Witnessing a Coup Operation Against the Trump White House?” Among the most interesting quotes in the piece:
What do you think: Are President Trump’s struggles entirely of his own making, or is there something more nefarious going on?
Oh no.
