It Matters That The Three Wise Men Existed

Does it matter if the Three Wise Men were real people and rooted in history? Some might argue otherwise, but Longenecker contends that it DOES matter that the magi were real people and that we can know where they came from.  

As he says, “For too long, too many Biblical scholars have insisted that the stories of the New Testament are either fanciful elaborations of simply narratives or completely fictional accounts concocted to make Jesus more special” and being able to prove the story of the magi, which is often considered the “most amazingly fabulous and therefore simply untrue” story in the Bible, fights back against that assumption.

Since these scholars are the one teaching the next generation of Christian scholars and historians, it is important that the story of the magi is more than a “delightful parable” and is instead a “story rooted in history.”
