Richard Weaver

Richard M. Weaver, Jr. was an American scholar who taught English at the University of Chicago. He is primarily known as an intellectual historian, political philosopher and a shaper of mid-20th century conservatism and as an authority on modern rhetoric.

Weaver was the oldest of four children of Richard and Carrye Weaver of Asheville, North Carolina. He earned an undergraduate degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and did graduate studies there and at Vanderbilt University before earning his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. He spent summers at Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and the Sorbonne during his graduate studies.

Weaver spent a year teaching at North Carolina State University before joining the English faculty at the University of Chicago, where he spent the rest of his academic career.
