All this has happened, Ponnuru explains, with active help from the media establishment: with collusion from leading media figures, leading Democrats such as Hillary and Bill Clinton, Barbara Boxer, and Mario Cuomo have cannily camouflaged the party of death's extreme and outlandish views. But they haven't yet won a total victory. Ponnuru argues that the same process by which the party of death has made such deep inroads into American society can now be used in reverse: pro-lifers must strive harder than ever to restrict abortion and ultimately to end it altogether, for the more we reject abortion, the more we may come to reject other choices for death, too.

  If you are already inclined to be pro-life, this book will give you more than ample reason to stay the course. If you are not so inclined, then I recommend focusing attention on the chapters relating to historically-based arguments used in support of court decisions. The history of political stances taken by contemporary politicians will also be enlightening. Perhaps you will have cause to wonder if the evidence in favor of your position is as strong as you expected, or even if it is true. Ponnuru's more essential arguments, based on modern science and reasoning from the ethics of liberty and equality, are less persuasive. Indeed, many are but a carefully phrased presentation of arguments already in use by pro-life organizations that present their case without theology. It may be difficult for someone arguing pro-life to extract a clear and concise flow of logic from this book. (I am presuming that is its purpose.) A better organization might have been to introduce topics by standard forensic flow of reasoning, using subheadings and flow charts on occasion. Without this kind of organization, it is difficult to put one's finger on replies to counter-arguments that the pro-choice forces have already prepared. The book does make the point of its title: Evolution of politicians and parties in response to issues of life and death. So, if the goal is description of the recent and current status of the American political scene, the author has succeeded well. Incidentally, I bought the book at a local chain bookstore. It wasn't discounted. I could have saved money [here].
