From Pat Buchanan: why the America we know and love may not survive much longer -- and what we must do to avert catastrophe

Day of Reckoning

by Patrick Buchanan

Patrick Buchanan is never one to mince words -- and in his latest trenchant analysis, he really lays it on the line. Day of Reckoning: How Ignorance, Ideology, and Greed Are Tearing America Apart is his eye-opening analysis of the forces foreign and domestic that are threatening us today in a series of crises that are more severe than any we have faced in our history.

A disloyal elite, says Buchanan, has hatched a plan to do nothing less than merge the United States with Mexico and Canada. American sovereignty and independence are also directly threatened today by a struggle for world hegemony that has begun among the United States, China, a newly resurgent Russia and jihadist Islam. Meanwhile, free trade is hollowing out American industry, destroying the dollar, and plunging our nation into permanent dependency and unpayable debt. To make matters worse, America has begun to Balkanize and break down along class, cultural, ethnic, and racial lines. It is now an open question whether we will survive as one nation and people, or disintegrate into what Theodore Roosevelt called a 'tangle of squabbling nationalities' and not a nation at all.

Buchanan, America's leading traditional conservative voice, a senior adviser to three American presidents, three-time presidential candidate, and author of five bestselling books, explains in Day of Reckoning that the peril in which America finds itself today is not a matter of partisan politics: for neither party is addressing the real crisis of America.

In the realm of foreign policy, Buchanan lays much of the responsibility for our current predicament at the feet of George W. Bush, whose conversion after the 9/11 terror attacks to an ill-conceived and misapplied ideology of 'democratism' has led us to the brink of military disaster abroad and savage division at home. Buchanan argues strongly that while the U.S. must stand for freedom and self-determination, the use of American troops to police the planet or to serve as the advance guard of some "world democratic revolution" is, as Iraq shows, imperial folly -- and it is a folly that will bring ruin to the republic. He also explains why, though America should speak out for human rights, the notion that we should serve as the world's moral arbiter, handing out human rights report cards to every nation on earth, is simply moral arrogance.

Domestic policies, says Buchanan, are no better. While free enterprise is good, the modern-day worship of "free trade" is destroying the dollar, de-industrializing America, and ending our economic independence. The unanimity of support for these policies, he maintains, is simply madness. He tackles the immigration problem also, explaining that while we have benefited from immigration and the melting pot worked with millions of Europeans, the idea we can import endless millions of aliens, legal and illegal, from every culture, clime, creed, and continent on earth, and still remain a unified nation, is suicidally absurd.

So are we done for? No! In his final chapter, Buchanan lays out ideas that can head off the end of the United States. He calls for a bottom-up review of all of America's Cold War commitments, sets out a comprehensive program to secure America's borders, offers up ideas to halt the erosion of our national sovereignty and to restore our manufacturing preeminence and economic independence, and even provides a formula for finding the way to peace in the culture wars. It's a series of realistic, uncompromising solutions for dangerous times -- a radical prescription for a radical malady, in these days when the very survival of America is at stake.

Pat Buchanan tells truths others dare not tell:

  • The factors that have brought the American era -- when we enjoyed unprecedented influence and freedom to act -- to an end after less than two decades

  • "Ideology": the false god that has become a de-Christianized America's substitute for true faith

  • How America may be headed for a disaster in the Middle East that will eclipse Vietnam in its consequences

  • "Democratism": how our nation's pursuit of the Bush Doctrine will bleed, bankrupt and break our republic in endless crusades and interminable wars

  • Why Islamism, although it is a clear and present demographic danger to Europe, it is not an existential threat to the United States -- unless we open our borders and allow it to become one

  • What explains the mass conversion of American conservatives to a free trade ideology that their fathers held in contempt

  • How the trade deals of the late 20th century were actually enabling acts for companies to shed national identities and loyalties and to reinvent themselves as global companies -- the new masters of the universe

  • Ten tough but simple steps to end the problem of illegal immigration once and for all

  • Why we must rewrite U.S. tax law to prosper America first, not a Davos elite that calls no country home

  • How America could rebound if we cast off ideology and began to look out for our country and countrymen first

  • How, to save America, the first imperative is to remove from power the ideologues of both parties who have nearly killed our country

  • How President Bush has succumbed to the lure of ideology -- a false god and a secular religion that seeks vainly, like Marxism, to create a paradise on earth
