A Choice Not An Echo represents the rise of two highly intertwined things: Phyllis Schlafly, the woman who helped launch the pro-life movement and took down the Equal Rights Amendment, and American conservatism, which Schlafly championed in the book.
The book deals with the Republican Party of 1964, and the selection of the Presidential nominee. Echoing similar primaries in 1980 and beyond, Schlafly recognized that the conservative movement could defeat the liberal, establishment, Rockefeller wing of the GOP. Schlafly’s self-written bestseller helped propel Sen. Barry Goldwater to the GOP nomination, and the conservative movement towards the national spotlight.
