5. The fight over inauguration crowd size was more than what it seemed

On the morning after his inauguration, Trump was upset that the media said his crowd size was smaller than Obama’s in 2009, and he felt the need to affirm the size of his crowd, especially as news reporters started to talk about the huge crowds gathering for women’s marches around the country.

His declarations of size became a huge media storm, and many called the president and his press secretary at the time, Sean Spicer, a liar. Kurtz points out though that this fight over crowd size was actually a proxy fight in a bigger battle. Spicer believed that this was one of the media’s earliest attempts to delegitimize the Trump administration, and he may have been on to something.
