After serving in the United States Navy, Rumsfeld set his eyes on Washington. In 1962, he was elected to represent Illinois’ 13th District and did so for three terms.
He served on many committees, notably the Joint Economic Committee and the Subcommittees on Military and Foreign Operations and was also the co-sponsor of the Freedom of Information Act. He resigned in 1969 to serve as head of the Office of Economic Opportunity under President Nixon.
