After the Civil War, the aristocratic white population built on the bent backs of their slaves’ labor came crumbling down. Woodrow Wilson realized he could secure the loyalty of these disgruntled whites by appealing to their racist viewpoints. Wilson recreated the lost aristocracy of the South by unifying the whites around hatred of blacks, and “the Democratic formula became one of white supremacy and black suppression,” writes D’Souza.
