Frederic Bastiat set out to explore what the law was and what the law should be. His result, The Law, became a classic, continuing on the classically liberal property-rights theories of Locke and other philosophers.

Bastiat argues the law exists because of the liberties and property of individuals. People created laws in order to defend everyone and their property.
