Removong monuments does nothing to deal with the issue. Momuments are History Next they will be calling to change the name of the White House. It is all divisive with intent to incite racism. Trying to create an issue because they can not focus and resolve healthcare, national defense, jobs, balanced budget, immigration and other relevant and important matters. It is all about trying to confuse and change the focus. NO THE MONUMENTS SHOULD NOT come down and if they do Martin Luther Kings name should be removed on every street and in the city and throughout the State. The national day of remembrance of Martin Luther King should also be removed from the list of National holidays.

You can not in good conscience eradicate history by removing monuments and expect that this made history more savory.

These monuments are part of our American history. They do not stand for hatred, as some state. Although slavery is wrong, all of America had slaves back then, so that shouldn’t be blamed only on the Confederacy. Slavery was abolished, which was great, but We can’t erase history before it was abolished. If anything, people should be more educated on our history. The Confederacy needs to remain for the simple fact that it’s American history.

I have never been in Africa, and I am not Black. All I know, is what I have read of living conditions there, so if anyone corrects me, please feel free.
The conditions in Africa, as I have read is, it is filled with severe poverty. Children are pictured living in filth and squaller, hungry, with bloated stomaches. If I were Black, I would get on my hands and knees, thanking God, that by some mericle, my ancestors came to America. My father was a poor immigrant, coming to this country without a dime. I don’t sit around blaming anyone. I simply worked my tail off, to get an education I paid for myself. My father’s rough life, was not an excuse to cry foul. I think, if John Mchan said to get a life, I think that is excellent advice. Stop Bitcoin and make a life, for yourself and family.

Johnny McHan – Telling African Americans to, “get a life,” minimizes the horrendous injustice done to them (not to mention it is racist and nasty). Children kidnapped from families, women raped by their masters, stuffed into slave ships, many dying before even arriving to this country. If they lived, they were tortured, bought and sold, and lived in total poverty. And you’re whining about moving some monuments (they are not being destroyed)? And, what the hell is unwarranted racism? Is there a type of racism that is warranted? When you say it’s everyone’s (all southerners) history, and you cannot change it, you disregard the point. Just because it’s a part of history, it doesn’t mean a monument honoring what was done and who did it, is something you are entitled to, at the expense of the people who were victimized. If it was your family or your ancestors who had been kidnapped, tortured, even murdered, would you want to see a statue honoring it? I doubt it. Your comments are shameful.

They are hell bent on destruction…else why did they not allow We Mississippians to take them and place them at Beauvoir , home of Jefferson Davis? Hate if why! Unwarranted racism! It is everyone in the South’s history! You cannot change it and blacks today need to get a life not based on whiny, need from centuries ago.

Our history is our history, we must not bend it or destroy it.
If you do, you are lying, to children, and all future generations.
I wonder, if anyone realizes, it was not the Southern slave owners, that enslaved African Blacks?
The Slave Traiders BOUGHT the slaves, from African tribes, that had already enslaved, other Neighboring tribesmen.
The slave traders, could not risk losing a crew member, by trying to capture and enslave African natives. It was safer, to purchase, those who had already been enslaved, by other Africans.

These monuments should not be seen as a way to celebrate the evils of slavery, but as a way to remind us that we overcame this darkness in our past. I think “sanitizing” our past, is to take for granted that not everyone enjoyed the same freedom, and the bravery of those who stood up to the treachery! Would people “feel better” if we demolish Auchwitz?

The most obvious conclusion is LOVE THY ENEMY. But even that pales to the duty of preservation of Truth and prevention. Why don’t people see that these artifacts are PROOF POSITIVE that “swords can be beaten into plowshares”. This is work that has been done. Southerners have ALL endeavored to live in peace and compatibility ALWAYS. They have never attempted to spread Slavery even beyond the legal and rational limits. Neither fiends, nor lechers, nor greedy motives are demonstrable here.

The Civil War is a part of our history. Quit trying to erase it. Anyone who is offended by this part of our history needs to leave the country. The war was not based solely on slavery, but also on state rights. If all you idiot liberals would check out the records, instead of reading all the government backed books, you’ll find out the biggest majority of the men who fought were NOT slave owners.

I think the gov. And the black race needs to stop bullying the white race and the flag of the south. We are suppose to live and learn from our heritage and past wars. Not hide them and try to get rid of the Confederacy. What the government and the blacks race is doing is called bullying and racism against the Confederacy and the heritage of our past families that fought hard in that war. The Confederacy doesn’t owe anyone any apologies for anything that happened way before we all was even thought of. Noone has anyright to take anything away from heritage. And if the gov. Doesn’t stop the bullying then legal actions against the government bullying needs to be addressed. Every flag that has ever been in wars,in any country has heritage and bad past from them. The American flag had slaves under it in the north, the Spanish flag had slaves under it and etc.. so don’t hate on our Confederate flag if you can’t look back into the part of the other flags, and move on to make the world a better place.

That is the most absurd thing that I’ve heard recently. What the hell is wrong with these people. They need to worry about other things. How about worrying about the isis/islamic invasion on America soil. That has to be a leftist-liberal thinker. Have you become so simple minded that you can’t stand up for your country and it’s history. If you think things are screwed up and needs to change, just keep your head where it is. Things will get a lot worse if you don’t start thinking America First.

Should those that are interested in removing all reminders of the Civil War and slavery in particular, I label them hypocrites. Then why are they not yelling for the Stars and Stripes of Old Glory be taken down and tucked away. Surely these hypocrites must realize slavery and Jim Crow flourished longer under that flag with Federal approval than that under the flags of the Confederacy. These neo-fascists are following in Hitler’s footsteps when he blamed other races for Germany’s lost in WWI. One that does not learn from it repeats the same old mistakes.

    Leslie Quillen ·
I keep seeing this black lives matter, the truth of the history, the civil war was about slavery, etc. Let us all understand one thing clearly and simply. Mitch Landrieu thinks that you are all idiots, and you have proven it. The Civil War was the invasion of a seperate nation by the Union over TAXES!! Nothing more than that. The Democrats have you all fooled as they scream racism. Lincoln wanted the taxes the plantations made. Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama and the rest of the South were extremely successful. They wanted it. For those of you who do not understand that, then the stupidity is your own fault. The South was NOT a harbor of SLAVERY! Buying and selling human flesh was illegal and it was a sentence of death. Now, before you start screaming that whites were buying and selling slaves, you are correct. IN THE UNION!! The blacks died off when they got sick because their nasal passages were developed for a different region! So, they were moved farther South. Arabs sold slaves, that they had puchased from the African forefathers!! Why do you not blame them?? The Dutch were the first to ever bring a slave to the US. Why not blame them? The first American slave owner was a black man!! Why not blame him? You idiots have all been brainwashed. The Democrats have won. They wanted to keep you as slaves. Congratulations. When LBJ said that he would “have all n*****s voting Democrat for the next 150 years, you fell for it. Lincoln was elected as a Democrat!! He was forced to resign the Party when he chose to try and abolish slavery. He became Republican. The Democratic party showed up at the next convention of the Klu Klux Klan. And you idiots fell for the BS hook line and sinker. So, now, you want to erase the true history of the South. You are now, and will continue to be slaves to these owners until you find your true history. You think your life matters to them? Nope. They are importing people to kill you along with everyone else they can get to do the deed. You want to keep your welfare but eliminate Corporate America. Who will pay for those benefits when the Corporations paying taxes that finance your welfare are demolished? Do you still believe that they will be helping you? The answer is NO! The government does not pay for that. Citizens taxes do. If you do not believe that you are just a number on a piece of a voter roll, then you are absolutely lost! You are the victim of a continual game that OUR government has been playing since there were Whigs and Torries. You are the product of the demonic evil that they want you to be. If you still believe I am wrong, look at Democratic cities. Detroit has fallen, Chicago is fallen, Michigan is gone. The list goes on. You have no clue what the truth is. Congratulations on reaching the state of mind numbing blindness they have wanted to acheive.

what a crime against history and against all who gave their lives in our civil war, note, only 6% of our southern bretheren had anything to do with slavery, this whining needs to stop. erasing history is what the communists do! the lady before was right, it was a northern invasion that started the real hostilities. the south had a right to their independence, just like the colonials. most every country on this planet practiced this vile practice of slavery at sometime in their history, by the way people in this country obsess over it one would believe this country was the only one. grow up. another fact conveniently over looked is black folks were the ones selling black folk into slavery, sad but factual.

    April 24, 2017,9:41 pm

  41. Tunick Shuler

Slavery was just the flash point at the start of the Civil War, it started 50 years earlier with an Import Tariff in an effort to make an agricultural South buy the tools from an industrial North. In 1832, when it was increased to almost 100%, South Carolina was ready to secede at that time, and probably would have if Andrew Jackson didn’t back down. Skipping to 1857 when there was a recession being that the Government’s only income was tariffs and selling land (and the land bubble busted) Lincoln’s campaign was built on raising tariffs and making us isolationists. South Carolina swore that they would secede from the union and when he got elected, they did. What most of you call the Confederate Flag, because you are historically illiterate, is in fact he battle flag of Northern Virginia, the middle star stands for Maryland, who was going to secede, but Lincoln had the legislator and the Governor of Maryland put in prison so that they could not vote to secede. He also locked up 1,300 reporters who spoke out against him, one being the grandson of Francis Scott Key. Talk about biased media. Slaves came first as indentured servants, but later a court case involving a man named Anthony Johnson made slavery legal in the 13 colonies. He was a black man. Slavery in Africa was started by the African people. The first slaves were presented to a ship’s captain by a chieftain that had captured them from a warring village. They were presented to the Pope and he decided they would make good servants to the white man, because they were such good servants to him. To begin with, the blacks sold their war captives to the white ship captains and when the first whites tried to capture slaves themselves, to keep from paying the chieftains for them, they found that they were not as tough as the black warriors and were not immune to the diseases of the black man. Hundreds of them died trying to capture slave in Africa. Now the whites were not the only ones that came to Africa for slaves. When I see a black man saying he’s a Muslim I wonder if he realizes that the Arab/Muslim religion also took black slaves. They took girls of eight years and up for their harems, and they took the men to watch over the harems and be guards, they were castrated first. Of all the slaves brought to the Americas only 5% came to North America. The rest were sent to Brazil and the Caribbean Islands to work the sugar plantations. Slaves in America were treated as slaves and the worst treatment came after the invention of the cotton gin, but unless you can trace your genealogy from before the Civil War it may have been your ancestors doing the mistreating. Because at the time of the Civil War the census showed over 250,000 free blacks in the South, and 10% owned slaves. The largest plantation at the start of the war had over 200 slaves and it was owned by a black man. Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, said that he would make slavery a legal institution forever if the south did not secede. This flag has been hijacked, but every hate group has a swastika, and you can change my mind right now if you can show me a single confederate soldier or officer in the Civil War era with a swastika (another example of a symbol being subverted). The silent majority of the South knows this flag as heritage, and if you go to a true poll that’s been done, the majority of Americans see it as “Heritage not Hate” the hate comes from the ones who don’t understand history, because they were taught after the Johnson administration worked to changed history to justify the Civil Rights movement and the social programs. One historian, Shelby Foote, who was born in New Orleans said that “Neither side gave a rat’s @ss about slavery.” The statues and monuments of the Civil War should not be taken down because they are not “symbols of racism”. For all those who call confederate supporters Bigots: “Bigot, a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance.” You hate as much as you claim we do.

    April 24, 2017,9:34 pm

  42. Darlene Luce

Why do we only focus attention to one group lest they be ‘offended’? At the same time Africans were being brought here as slaves, many Native Americans were slaves and some Native Americans owned slaves. Also during this time and for quite a time after, many Europeans and Asians were coming to this country as “Indentured servants” who did not obtain their freedom until they paid off their debt if they lived long enough and if the contract owner honored the terms of the contract. Many of the aforementioned groups could easily find any flag or monument in this country to be an offensive reminder of the past if they so choose. We need to be proud to be Americans and proud of all America’s history even the not so pleasant parts because that history is what makes us who we are collectively. The monuments remind us of where we have been and how far we have come and should serve as an inspiration to continue to move forward. If the past did not happen as it did, we would not be where we are today.

    Why to change history??

    April 24, 2017,9:12 pm

  44. martha serafini

They are not destroying the monuments. They are moving them to storage then placing them in a museum or other facility where they can be seen in the context of the historical times they are from, instead of a public setting. If our fellow African – American citizens see the monuments as honoring a period of victimization and sub-human treatment that they experienced, then that is enough rationalization to move them. I am sure all the people posting here are white, so they cannot identify with the pain involved to the African-American Community. If these were monuments were offensive to the white population, they would have been moved long ago. SCOTT THOMAS – if it was your family that was enslaved and treated as a sub-human, I really doubt you would be telling people to,”get over it.” You would carry that as your very painful history, and any amount or type of “honoring” that time may have a very deep impact on you. Even today. And, you devalue their history even more by minimizing their desire to honor where they came from to call themselves, “African-Americans.” And to those who prefer to insult rather than discuss, you show your ignorance. To those of you who want to make this all about “the liberals,” you’re as ignorant as the bigots posting here. Nobody is getting rid of history. They are simply putting it in a location that places in a proper context, rather than in a public setting where they clearly offend many.

You know what’s funny, The South wanted to abolish slavery before the North! The Stars and Stripes were more devious than the Stars and Bars ever were! What’s next, remove the Stars and Stripes? April 24, 2017,8:23 pm

  48. Beatrice Mansfield

Definitely not! One can rewrite history, but not change what actually happened. We are supposed to study history to learn from past mistakes, so as not to make the same mistakes again. People living in the past did the best they could with what they knew and their circumstances. Those fighting the Civil War believed sincerely that they were doing what was best for the country. Without the Civil War we would probably be a divided country today. Many risked their lives for that belief and should not be judged by today’s standards. Many made great sacrifices and deserve to be honored for such. Humans will always make mistakes, and our country would not be what it is today if things had been different. Respect what we have and do better in the future. History is what history was – learn from it.

You liberals need to work with us patriots and read the history of the War for Southern Independence.
Many of you know little what the war was about. If we give up history, it must include MLK.

I agree with Bruce Waters. If you’re going to remove the civil war from history and EVERYTHING that had anything to do with it ? Then get rid of MLK day. Get rid of black History month. Give all blacks that want a ticket back to Africa 25K payment per family. They give up their American citizenship AND NEVER come BACK ! I’m sick of this.

On last comment.to follow up to the post below. It is sad that the KKK took up the confederate flag which is one of the reasons people want to destroy our heritage. We all know slavery is wrong, but there were many other reasons why the civil war was fought. The majority of southerners kept no slaves and were somewhat ambivalent about it all.

    April 24, 2017,5:38 pm

  60. Landon

It is high time American history to be saved and shared with all.
the so called idiots that want to remove Confederate history need to be educated to the fact that Confederate Americans were not raciest and not promoters of slavery. It is time for decent American citizens stop listening to the loud mouth protesters and do not fall for their false claims.

    April 24, 2017,5:32 pm

Remove the confederate flag, and you should remove likeness’s of MLK, and any other symbols of civil unrest. Those who try to forget history are destined to repeat it.

The Civil War was about taxes. Slavery was not an issue until about two years into the war. This was a long time ago and I believe we have paid our dues. Time to let go but keep our history.

As an author,I recently went out to Missouri to get information for my new book where 1,200 of the 6,000 civil war battles took place and discovered a number of massacres and atrocious that we were never taught about in school, and it was clear that good men died honorably protecting their families, farms and homeland from in invading union. As someone said, this is our history and the federal government would like to sweep it under the rug. They are starting to change the name of the civil war to the War of the Rebellion. If troops invaded your homeland and you rose up to protect it does that make you a rebel? Or does that make you a Patriot/

Slavery was unforgivable, but it IS part of our history. When all references to history are removed, who we are changes. I remember during the cold war, they used to tell us that the USSR removed all reference to things that had happened in the past (that they didn’t like) from the history books. History is how we get to where we are. Do we want to become like Russia. I don’t think so.

I grew up in Alabama, and we honored veterans of the War Between the States (as southerners call it), not because they may have defended slavery, but because they gave their lives in defense of what had become a new country within the US borders. Most southerners are of the opinion that the war was about states rights, not about slavery. We are still fighting that battle today…for states to retain sovereign rights on many issues.

Patriots in New Orleans should throw out the cowardly politicians who want to insult the defenders of the city during the War for Southern Independence. This action stinks of 1984 and the old Soviet practice of altering photos to delete those who had fallen out of favor.

Three of the four monuments are of respected figures of the time and in our history. The fourth, now gone, should be removed to a museum with a presentation of how America has changed since those dark days of the Civil War Era from a narrow minded prejudiced society to one which is more reflective of our Declaration of Independence which states that all are equal.

You can’t erase history just because we don’t like it. If we erase it we will never learn from it good or bad. History is history and truth is truth it can’t be changed just because it’s not what we prefer it to be. We should always have true reminders of the past.

Should we next remove any reference, or museums regarding the Holocaust, in case we upset Germans?? Or maybe stop celebrating the 4th of July so we don’t offend the English?? Absolutely ridiculous…..
