4. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is one of many movies building up awards hype this year. The movie follows the titular “Lady Bird”, a precocious Catholic schoolgirl trying to figure out her collegiate and professional future while also juggling the pressures of family and her social life. Contrary to the way many such movies go, Lady Bird portrays the mother, the Catholic school, and their conservative values in a sympathetic light as contrasted with typical acts of teenage rebellion. 

Few other conservative movies this year have had such a poignant focus on the value of family, tradition, and the power of parenting, and it’ll be interesting to see if Hollywood’s bigwigs actually decide to recognize a movie so steeped in family values.

Lady Birth stars Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, and Tracy Letts and was directed by Greta Gerwig. It has an unprecedented Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%.
