Lincoln’s Conservative Drink: Cooper Union (Black and Tan)

In 1860, Lincoln gave his famous Cooper Union address, a year before he was even inaugurated as the 16th President. It is said that he celebrated the success of his speech on the Founder’s view of slavery by going to McSorley’s Old Ale House, which is still open today. The Ale House served only two kinds of ale, black and tan.

Cooper Union (a.k.a. Black and Tan)

  • 1 pale ale
  • 1 Guinness

Pour the pale ale into a pint glass about halfway. Float the Guinness on top to fill the glass,by pouring it over an upside down bar spoon over the pale ale.
